Meet the Volunteers - the Aurdahl Family

Next up in OBAB’s meet the volunteer series – The Aurdahl family. They often bring their whole family to OBAB’s 2nd Saturday Clean ups and are great examples of how even the youngest child can get involved and make a big difference.

While the Aurdahl family only recently moved back into the area, their roots run deep. And Kyles and Jolene’s love story started here.

Kyle grew up in Coos Bay and was attending SWOCC when Jolene’s parents moved here. She was in college in another state and she came to visit her parents over Christmas break. During that visit she met Kyle at Church. They went on their first date soon after and that moved into a long-distance relationship for a time as they both pursued their degrees at different universities. But then they got engaged and ended up graduating with each other at BYU-I.

Jolene’s educational background is in Early Childhood education and before she left to be a stay-at-home parent, she was a Developmental Specialist in the Education system. Kyle’s degree is in Secondary Ed. and taught Social Studies for 11 years until moving into school administration. They moved back here in 2021.

They have a great group of 6 kids in their family ranging in age from 15 to 4 years old. The Aurdahl’s enjoy family adventures at the sand dunes, hiking, Hall Lake, the beach and spending time with extended family that lives in the area. Kyle is really into fitness, sports and watching Western films. Jolene loves to read, sleep when she can and garden.

They started volunteering with OBAB when they first moved here because they love to serve as a family. They loved that OBAB provided that opportunity and think of it as a tool for them to teach their kids.

Jolene said “Kids need to know to get out of themselves. And they learn how lucky they are when they help other people.”

Because of their love for the parks and genealogy the OBAB events at Marshfield Pioneer cemetery and the various city parks have been their favorites. Jolene would like to see OBAB tackle more community projects in the future and thinks a community paint day would be really beneficial for sprucing up the area.
